Garaio Provincial Park is located on the outskirts of the old village from where it gets its name, on the banks of the Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoir. This public park forms a small 116 hectare peninsula that juts into the reservoir at the mouth of the river Zadorra.
This space with its gently rolling green hills, extensive and well-tended fields, which alternate with copses, all on the water’s edge, is an ideal place to experience nature, learn to care for it, preserve it, love it. Blackthorn, hawthorn, maple and ash trees, storks, robins, jays, great tits, wagtails, butterflies, badgers and hedgehogs are just some examples of the flora and fauna to be discovered and enjoyed.
The park has a network of paths and car parks to guarantee easy, pleasant access, as well as a wide range of well-maintained equipment and facilities for public use (information office, signposted paths, viewpoints, drinking fountains, toilets, beach areas, showers, etc.) for all kinds of recreational activities.
Observing the woodland flora and fauna, walking or cycling, nature photography, guided tours, participating in workshops, flying kites or bathing are just some of the activities that can be enjoyed at Garaio.
The information office is located in Garaio Provincial Park, providing information on the Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoir environment as well as on all the activities that can be carried out and the services provided.
The Information Office may be temporarily closed when the staff are conducting guided tours or monitoring the environment.
For those who wish, there is a bicycle loan service available:
The various guided tours offered are the following:
Garaio Park can be accessed from Salburua-Buesa Arena stadium via country paths and a single 1,200 meter stretch of road at Lubiano. The overall distance is 12.4 kilometres.
It can also be reached via the suitably prepared green routes, away from road traffic. From the capital of Álava, the Vasco-Navarro green route (Vitoria-Gasteiz – Puerto de Arlabán) as far as Landa, or by turning off at Amarita to continue by local asphalt roads as far as the reservoir dam near Ullíbarri-Gamboa. Both Landa and the dam link up with the reservoir‘s green route to continue to Garaio.
Public transport can also be used, thanks to Line 4 from Vitoria-Gasteiz
The Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoir is only 15 kilometres from Vitoria-Gasteiz. The Park can be accessed via the A-3012, which connects both the A-1 Vitoria-Gasteiz/Pamplona motorway (Ozaeta exit) and the N-104 with the village of Ozaeta. The turn-off for Garaio Park is signposted just before reaching the village of Maturana.
