ARTIUM Basque Centre-Museum of Contemporary Art
Artium, as a museum and cultural activity centre, is a reference point for the heritage work it does and the promotion of contemporary creativity.
Since its opening on 26th April, 2002, it has developed an ambitious exhibition programme, including the work of major international artists, as well as an extensive schedule of activities linked to contemporary culture (film, music, conferences, courses, seminars, dramatic arts, …), education and the dissemination of modern art.
However, the history of Artium dates back to the last quarter of the twentieth century when the Provincial Council of Álava took the first steps to create a collection presently comprising of more than 3000 works of art, ranging from paintings to multimedia installations.
The museum-centre’s permanent collection is considered to be one of the best and most important in contemporary Basque and Spanish art.
It is located just outside the Medieval centre, very close to the new Museum of Archaeology and the Fournier Playing Card Museum.
